Cabins versus Airbrush Tanning

Airbrush tanning is the easiest way to apply the active ingredient DHA (found in most self tanning products) which, when applied to the skin, causes the skin to darken. The fine mist from the airbrush ensures a perfectly even application to the skin surface and as there is no 'rubbing in' required you avoid streaking and patchiness.

The formula contains two tanning agents.

1. An instant bronzer, which will give an instant tan effect and allow you to see exactly where you are spraying the clear DHA ingredient.

2. DHA - this ingredient gives the most natural looking colour but it takes up to 24 hours to fully develop. The instant bronzer can be washed off after 8 hours (it's water soluble) as by then the DHA will have fully absorbed.

DHA is a colourless derivative of sugar cane that to date is the only active ingredient approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for sunless tanning. DHA reacts with the amino acids in the dead surface cells found in the outermost layer of the skin, causing it to darken naturally. DHA does not damage skin as it only affects this outermost layer (stratum corneum).

It takes about 20-30 minutes to apply and 5-10 minutes to dry. The tanning solution used by Art Service has perfect adhesion and rapid absorption rates and is one of the fastest drying solutions on the market.

No, the solution contains no perfume and has no unpleasant smell normally associated with self-tanning products. Unlike some other tanning solutions the solution we use is completely odourless.

No, Art Service use a superior tanning solution formulated to ensure that just one single application will give a rich golden colour that lasts up to six days. Other tanning systems may require two applications.

For the very best results shower and exfoliate before the airbrushing to remove dead skin cells and ensure that you are not wearing any perfume, make-up, deodorant, creams or moisturizers. If possible avoid shaving or waxing before the application. Wear loose fitting cotton clothing, as the water-soluble instant bronzer may rub off on clothing.

To allow the DHA to fully absorb and react it is essential that you remain dry for at least 8 hours. Avoid any activity that may cause perspiration. After 8 hours you can wash off the instant bronzer if required as the DHA colour will have begun to develop. The DHA colour takes up to 24 hours to fully develop and will look its best if you moisturize daily.

A colour change is usually apparent within an hour of application. The darker you tan naturally, the darker your tan will develop with an airbrush tan. Maximum darkening may take 8-24 hours to develop. The reaction looks natural, as if from the sun.

About one week. Because the sunless tan is derived from the reaction of the dead skin cells in the outer layer of your skin with the DHA, when these skin cells are lost so is your tan. Therefore if you moisturize daily and take care of your skin, your tan will last longer. If you take long hot baths and showers and wear tight clothes that rub your skin or do anything that encourages your skin to shed, your tan will not last as long.

DHA is thought to be completely harmless - the FDA added it to their list of approved ingredients for cosmetic use almost 30 years ago. Contact dermatitis caused by DHA has rarely been reported. Most causes of sensitivity are due to other ingredients such as preservatives in the preparation. The solution used by Art Service contains no such ingredients.

As often as you like because it so harmless. Most people like to top up their tan once a week and it is completely safe to do so.

The sun and tanning beds cause irreparable damage to the skin. It is widely known that tanning from the sun or tanning beds can lead to wrinkles, premature ageing, and increases the risk of skin cancer. You can get an airbrush tan even if you don't tan easily. They are completely safe, take less time than a real tan and look completely natural. Above all you get a great tan without risk of wrinkles, skin damage and skin cancer.

  • While instant tan cabins may be quicker, airbrush tanning is more personal, allowing more attention to the client's needs.

  • Cabins give an equal mist all over the body. Some clients require body areas to take a deeper tan, for example existing tan lines, which need more coverage to ensure an even colour. Also the client may require a deeper tan to the face, which always fades more quickly. With airbrush tanning this is possible.

  • A cabin will give an average spray for the average body coverage. Different body parts absorb more solution than others. Airbrush tanning allows the professional to detect these areas and apply solution as necessary.

  • Cabins are not suitable for people who do not like enclosed spaces or have breathing problems, such as asthma. Airbrush tanning can be performed in a larger environment with greater ventilation.
